South Africa did not enter the Second World War until 1941 owing to domestic political differences.  Many of their forces fought in North Africa.  As this issue appeared alongside the usual definitives it could be thought of as a propaganda issue, depicting all the different aspects of the fighting forces.  There are a multitude of minor and not so minor varieties to collect.  The 1s3d value is generally listed with this issue, strictly speaking, it belongs with the bantam issue as it came out with other Bantam War stamps and had slogans printed on its margins.  Look out for this issue with “Egypt / Prepaid” postmarks.  They were used on the mail sent home by soldiers fighting in North Africa owing to a shortage of cancellers.
